CSA Countdown - 7 weeks to go!

NEWS FROM THE FARM

We're 7 weeks out to the first week of the CSA season, or at least that's what the calendar says.  We still have a big pile of snow sitting in the shady part of our backyard!  While our greenhouses have been buzzing with activity since late February, we haven't been able to get out into the fields to prepare the soil for the coming season until yesterday.  It was a short window to get things done.  The ground had finally defrosted and had dried out enough to get the tractors in for some tillage and mineral spreading.  The forecast for the coming week calls for more rain, so we're glad we were able to get something done!  As farmers have always said, "Make hay while the sun shines!"

Everyone wants to know if this slow start to spring will set back the season.  Our hope is that we can play catch up in the fields over the next few weeks (fingers crossed for sun and warmer temps!) and that things will be back on track by early May.  Any perennial crops will be delayed, but luckily we don't rely on many of those for our CSA.

On a personal note, we wanted to tell you that this will be Farmer James' last year with us at the Golden Earthworm.  He has purchased a farm in Canterbury, Connecticut where he will continue farming next season.  While we are very excited for him and his new enterprise, we will miss him here very much.  He has been a wonderful business partner and friend.

I look forward to keeping you updated over the next few months as we approach the start of our season.  We have some new features coming to our weekly CSA Newsletters this season and I can't wait to share them with you!  - Maggie

CSA MEMBER PROFILE

Introducing a new feature in our newsletter!  We'd like to introduce you to some members our CSA farm community.

JULIANE LITTMAN & FAMILY - Port Washington

Juliane has been a long-time member of our CSA, and she and her family have helped us at our Port Washington Farmers' Market over the years.

How many seasons have you been a member of the Golden Earthworm Farm CSA?
9 years
Do you remember what first drew you to it?
Receiving organic vegetables from a local farm with access to the farmer and farm land is almost like growing the vegetables in your own garden.
What have been some of your favorite vegetables in the shares?
My favorite vegetables are the ones that I didn’t know before receiving them in my share.  Watermelon radishes are one example.  They are the best addition to sandwiches – sweet and crunchy.
How would you describe your cooking style?   Has it changed over the years as a member of the CSA?
I always liked to cook, but through the CSA I became more aware of vegetable seasons.  I know take that into account even during those long winter months when I don’t receive a CSA share.
What's the one staple ingredient or pantry item you just can't do without?
Nuts, any type, as well as sunflower seeds – love them lightly toasted on my salads.

Do you have a favorite story or experience related to the CSA?
When my daughters were younger they used to say: Why do you have to cook all these greens?  Now we are fighting over the leftovers, especially kale, bok choy and swiss chard.  They love them all.
What is your favorite part of being a member of our CSA?
Having my fridge filled with fresh greens and my counter covered with tomatoes filling the kitchen with their great scent.

CSA 2014 - Week #26

Happy Thanksgiving!  This is the final week of deliveries for all Tuesday and Wednesday sites.  Thursday and Friday sites ended last week, but we thought you might want to receive our final newsletter of the season.

Season Wrap-up
By all accounts, this was a fantastic growing season.  We had just the right mix of sun, rain and temperatures that farmers can only hope for.  Our salad harvester proved to be an excellent investment, increasing the quantity (and value) of baby greens we could harvest for our members, and we had a bumper crop of some of our member-favorites like tomatoes, potatoes and greens this fall.  Of course there were some disappointments, like losing our early fall planting of carrots and not being able to source sweet potato slips (hence, no sweet potatoes this fall), but the ups generally outweighed the downs.  And as farmers love to say...there's always next year!

If you were new to our CSA this year, you were probably surprised by the ebb and flow of the harvest over the course of the season.  Most people expect the high summer to be the time of bumper crop harvests, but it's quite the opposite!  That's when our plants are in full growing gear, not necessarily ready to harvest.  It's not until September, October and even November when the share boxes start to burst at the seams and the values of the shares soar.  Kim did some number crunching for those of you who are interested, and the value of the shares over the course of the season came in at $688-$695.  That means that you received about 18% bonus!

Winter on the farm
Everyone wants to know what we do at the farm in the winter.  This year, we can happily say, "not much at all."  We have decided not to offer winter shares this year so we can spend some much-needed time as a family.  So, you'll probably find us sitting by the fire, catching up on reading, knitting projects, home/farm improvements, cooking up some delicious food in the kitchen and chasing after our kids around the farm.  The best way to keep up with us is through our Instagram feed or our Facebook page.  We'll be posting through the winter months.

Giving thanks
We spend much of our time at the farm running around.  Literally running from barn to field, back to barn, back to field.  It's always time for something, and we're always running out of it - time to harvest, time to irrigate, time to wash, time to cultivate, time to pack boxes, load up and head out on deliveries.  Time to get the newsletter written, return the e-mails, write the recipes, cook the food.  We are thankful for this time of year when we have time to sit here and think about this beautiful thing we have created.  It's amazing what has evolved here over the past 18 years (could it be that long?) on this little piece of sandy soil sandwiched between the Bay and the Sound.  Our little CSA has grown to provide food for thousands of members every week of the season. Clean, beautiful food that is planted, tended and harvested with incredible love and care.  We are thankful for you, our members, for placing your trust in us to grow your food.  And we are incredibly grateful to our outstanding employees who work long, hard days to make our farm function.  Their hands are the ones weeding your carrots, harvesting your cauliflower, washing your potatoes and packing your boxes each week.  They are talented, dedicated and committed to the "art" of farming.

We wish you and your families a very Happy Thanksgiving and a joyous and peaceful holiday season!

With warm wishes and LOVE,
Maggie, Farmer Matt, Farmer James, Galen, Zinn & the farm crew

P.S. Don't forget to GIVE this holiday season!
Most of us have so much.  Too much, really.  I don't want to tell you what to do, folks, but I think I will just this once. Give away your money! Yes, give it away- even if you think you need it. I promise you don't need it as much as some other people do.  (Do you have a roof over your head?  Food in your fridge?  Do your children have a warm bed to sleep in?)  We will personally be giving to these two organizations in lieu of gifts and in the names of our family and friends this holiday season.

Oxfam America - http://www.oxfamamerica.org
Unicef USA - http://www.unicefusa.org

These are just two of many wonderful organizations doing good work all over the world. We encourage you to do your research and find an organization that you feel will put your money to the best use.

What a fantastic box we have for you (again) this week! Please note that since Thursday and Friday sites will end their season next week, they will be receiving a slightly different share than the rest of you who still have three more deliveries to go.  This applies mainly to the carrots.  We're trying to give everyone 2 weeks worth of our glorious fall carrots, so if you don't get them this week, you can expect them in the last two shares  - unless something unexpected happens!

CSA 2014 Week #22

NOTES ON THE SHARE

When I walked into the packing barn last night, I was overwhelmed by the sheer mass of produce that was being packed in the share boxes.  Huge crates were brimming with broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, watermelon radishes and potatoes. As we near the end of our harvest season, you can really feel the shift from our more delicate spring and vibrant summer shares to a much more robust harvest.  These vegetables beg to be roasted or turned into warming soups.  Your farmers have balanced out these heavier crops nicely this week with some baby greens and velvety lettuces for your salads.

*A note on the Cauliflower -- Cauliflower heads don't all mature at the same time, so we harvest them as they are ready.  This means that everyone will receive a beautiful head of cauliflower some time over the next few weeks.

**A note on the Watermelon Radish -- You may notice a few holes in your watermelon radishes.  These are cosmetic, and were due to minor insect damage earlier in the season.  You can remove them by cutting them out with a sharp knife.

NOTES ON THE SHARE

Thanks to everyone who came out to the farm on Sunday!  It was a spectacular day and we really enjoyed seeing so many of you!

This week's share is heavy on the greens!  I got a phone call from a member about a month ago who was inquiring about the lack of greens in her share.  I explained that most leafy greens don't grow well in the summer heat (except for Swiss Chard) and that if she waited just a few more weeks she would be inundated with them.  She was very happy to hear this!  Well, dear member, while I don't recall your name, this week's share is dedicated to you!

Do you want to know what I'm going to be doing with all these greens?  Here's my menu run-down for the week...  The bunch of toscano kale is going in a big pot of kale & white bean soup.  The broccoli is going to be steamed gently and topped with butter and salt & pepper - my kids' favorite!  I'm going to indulge in a fabulous kale salad (again) with the baby kale, I'll make a nice autumn salad with cranberries, scallions and toasted almonds to top off the mixed baby lettuce (there's probably enough lettuce for 2 of these salads this week), the leeks will be braised and the bok choi is going into a stir-fry!  What are you cooking up with your box this week?  Share it with us on Facebook or Instagram.  #cookyourshare @goldenearthworm

NOTES ON THE SHARE

In case you're counting, we have nine more weeks of harvest for this year's CSA program.  Long Island's East End has a longer growing season than most other places in the Northeast because of the close proximity to Long Island Sound and Peconic Bay.  Our farm, which is essentially two separate parcels of land, is adjacent to both the Sound and the Bay.  We hope you can make it out to visit us and see where your food is grown at our Harvest Festival in October...
