News from the farm
Happy Thanksgiving! The final delivery of the season is finally here. (Thursday sites will receive theirs next week.) Now it's time to put the farm to bed and enjoy a restful off-season. As the farmer's wife, I like to joke that my husband is married to both me and the farm...and it certainly feels like that during the growing season! I look forward to this time of year when we can spend quality time together as a family. Our two little ones are growing up so quickly and Galen has really taken to his role as "Little Farmer" this season, driving the tractor (with his daddy), washing veggies and even packing the CSA boxes! (He loves it and begs to stay at the farm well past dinnertime when we drag him home...) Zinn is just starting to take his first steps, so I'm sure he'll be tottering around in the warm greenhouses this winter.
Matthew and I have so much to be thankful for this year - most importantly for our happy and healthy family, but also for the wonderful CSA community that supports our farm. It's a funny model, this CSA thing... You're asked to put your trust in a farmer who you may have never met, sending in your hard-earned money months before you ever see a vegetable. But it's this model of trust between farmer and member that has allowed our farm to grow. We feel that there is nothing more important than the health of our families, our communities and our planet, and your support of our farm goes towards strengthening all of these.
Warmest wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season! - Maggie

And mache is a special French salad green that has a lovely delicate texture and mild flavor. Wash gently and toss with a light vinaigrette. Here's a fun piece NPR did on mache a few years back. Bon appetit!

Snow! It may be beautiful, but it's not nice weather for working in fields. As the season comes to a close, it's less comfortable for our workers picking and washing the veg in these cold temperatures. They deserve a big thank you for their hard work all season, and especially now as they work through the snow and wind and freezing wash waters.
Our winter shares are almost sold out, so be sure to sign up in the next few days if you want to snag one!
WINTER SHARES
We are now accepting applications for our Winter CSA. The program consists of 5 deliveries from December through March (every 3 weeks) with pick-ups at the farm in Jamesport, and in Manhasset and Port Washington. Our locations for pick-up are limited during the winter since the produce needs to be kept indoors where it won't freeze! LEARN MORE HERE.

Did I promise the end of the peppers last week? I think I did, but the pepper plants had other plans. So here, fully into the first week of November, we present you with 4 more peppers! It's amazing, really. And more of the wonderful brassicas you all loved last week....and a nice quart of sweet potatoes for roasting in your oven on a cold night.
We expected a freeze here on Sunday night, but were pleasantly surprised when it didn't happen! We lose our tender crops in a freeze, so luckily we may have a little more time to harvest them before another freeze warning comes our way. (Our cold weather crops can be harvested through mid-December despite freezing temps!)

Ok, so this is the last week of peppers! (I promise.) We've had a bumper crop of peppers this season and as is typical in CSA, you've received the bounty of the harvest over the past couple months. Luckily peppers are easy to roast and freeze for use in recipes over the winter! Check out the instructions under the Recipe section in this newsletter.
The cauliflower is a real treat this week! This crop is not especially easy to grow and we haven't had it for several seasons, so enjoy! I whipped up a delicious cauliflower and potato soup last week. Here's the simple recipe: In a heavy bottomed soup pot, saute a chopped onion and 1 clove of minced garlic in some olive oil. Add a head of cauliflower (roughly cut into 1" chunks), 2-3 small potatoes and 1 carrot (all peeled and cut into 1/2" chunks) and saute for a few minutes. Add water to just cover the veg, put a top on the pot and boil, then simmer until the potatoes, carrots and cauliflower are tender. Use an immersion blender to puree smooth and season to taste with salt and pepper. Bon appetit!Connect with your Farm

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our annual CSA Harvest Festival on Sunday. It was a beautiful day and we hope everyone enjoyed seeing the farm! A very special thank you to Barbara Garriel, Alexa Weitzman, Stacey Ornstein and our lovely volunteer, Nancy Glover, for making the day such a success!
I think we're finally turning a corner towards some real autumn weather this week. The farm is still bustling, but things do start to slow down just a bit by the end of this month. The tomatoes in this week's share will be the last of the season. I'm still amazed that we're harvesting so many tomatoes this late in the season. If you want to save them to use in soups this winter, just chop them up (with skins on!) and pop in a ziplock bag in the freezer. - Maggie

I'm so excited about this week's share! Little Farmer and I were discussing this over dinner last night and we've decided that the Baby Salad Kale in this week's share is probably our favorite crop grown on our farm. (We were both chowing down on the kale salad with lemon, garlic and bread crumbs...recipe below.) DO NOT COOK THIS KALE! It is meant to be eaten raw in a salad. You can dress it up with your favorite house dressing, but I really cannot stress enough how fabulous our kale salad recipe is!
Check out this beautiful Red Salad Kale in the field...
I must also note that this is the first time EVER that we've grown napa cabbage for the CSA. It's a really lovely variety of cabbage with crisp-tender leaves. I've shared two great recipes below.

News from your Farmer
Continuing our update from last week, here are a few notes on this week's share...
Sweet Potatoes! - These are different from the sweet potatoes you are familiar with. They are freshly harvested from the soil the day before you receive them and are not yet cured. The skins are very delicate and they should not be refrigerated. The typical post-harvest process of heating the potatoes for 7-10 days hardens the skins and prepares them for storage. We will cure future harvests, but we wanted to give this special first harvest right away. We are giving out a variety of sizes right now because we are digging the crop daily. Some are large, some are babies, but all taste great. In general these sweet potatoes will cook faster than older ones, so you'll have to adjust your cooking times accordingly.
Red Long Peppers - It has been quite a wait for these to turn from green to red, but here they are! Our first red sweet peppers in many, many years. Peppers suffer from cold injury at the temperatures of a normal household refrigerator, but they will stay in ok shape for a few days. 45-60F is best, but should be in a plastic or wax bag so they don't dehydrate. Hopefully you cannot resist eating them right away and won't have to worry about storing them.
Baby Bok Choi - Our lovely greens are beginning to return now, and we have a good sized bunch of baby bok choi for everyone. This is true baby bok choi with a light green stem. The whole thing is edible!
Baby Arugula - This is beautiful arugula. We have washed some of it, depending on the picking conditions, but we recommend that you re-wash at home before you eat it. It has a short shelf life due to its delicate leaves, so be sure to handle gently and eat it as soon as possible.
Celery Root - A fascinating vegetable that many of you may not be familiar with. Strange looking, great smelling and excellent if prepared correctly. We have included recipes to assist you in succeeding with this oddball but super vegetable!
The tomatoes are not finished quite yet! We are taking a little hiatus due to the very slow ripening occurring with the colder weather. We do expect to harvest more tomatoes in small quantities over the next few weeks. The weather will decide this, as tropical warm season crops dislike cold weather and growth rates decline.

A Crop Update from your Farmers
As we enter the second half of the CSA season, here's a quick crop update... Be forewarned that this update details the loss of several summertime crops. Our fall crops are doing marvelously and you can see photos of the beautiful fields below...
Cherry tomatoes - Typically we are able to give out a full portion of orange cherry tomatoes to each member for a few weeks. This year some unusual things have occurred in the cherry tomato patch. Back in June when we had all the rain the lower 1/4 of the field flooded for a short period of time. All the plants in this section died shortly afterwards. Over the next few weeks, the remaining plants began to develop a disease called bacterial speck. While the plants eventually rebounded and are in decent shape now, the yields have been minimal. We hope to include more cherry tomatoes in the shares soon, but we will have to see how long the warm weather holds out.
Eggplant - For 2 or 3 years our eggplants have been wiped out by Colorado potato beetles. This year we moved them to the farm in Jamesport where there is less potato beetle pressure in hopes of having a successful crop. After a couple of times handpicking and spraying the beetles we were successful at eliminating their colonies and now have a nice planting of eggplant. Since we've had such trouble in the past we were cautious about planting a full CSA-sized planting and this is why we have only have enough to give out to some groups each week or two. Everyone will eventually receive the same amount of eggplant. Now we are having some problems with verticillium wilt and perhaps another unidentified disease so occasionally an eggplant makes it into the box which is not up to snuff. Let us know if you receive a bad eggplant and we will happily replace it.
Garlic - Our garlic did very well this year. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of it. There were shortages of Certified Organic garlic seed last fall and we only planted about 1/3 the amount we normally plant. We know you all love garlic and we're doing everything we can to get our hands on as much seed as possible for next season.
